A transient is a single wave consisting of a brief mono-, bi-, or triphasic waveform. Examples of transients are spike or sharp discharges, which are defined as waves distinguishable from the background activity. A spike discharge has higher correlation with a seizure diagnosis but not all spike transients are abnormal.
